Here at Fornaris Dental Care, Dr. Fornaris and our team are committed to bringing our patients the very best options in oral health technology. We believe that lasers are quite literally the next wave of minimally invasive dentistry. They can be used to carry out many different oral health treatments – including the treatment of periodontitis. That is why we have incorporated the LANAP protocol (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) into our practice as a means of addressing severe cases of periodontal disease and reversing its long-term effects.
LANAP is an innovative technology that uses dental lasers to remove bacteria and diseased tissues near the tooth root surfaces. LANAP effectively stimulates the reattachment of gums and regeneration of underlying bone, potentially stopping and reversing the effects of periodontal disease.
LANAP uses a special light wavelength that is specifically designed to target the dark pigmentation within diseased tissues. The laser produces a focused and thin beam of pulsed infrared light. The light does not harm healthy tissues, but is instead absorbed and used to destroy diseased cells. It is very precise and is also effective in cauterization of the treatment site, which aids in clot formation and healing.
There are many reasons for choosing LANAP over traditional surgery. To start, there are no scalpels required for LANAP procedures, which greatly improves treatment accuracy and reduces the risk of human error. Under a trained and experienced oral health professional like Dr. Fornaris, LANAP reduces post-treatment bleeding, minimizes the risks of treatment-related complications, and can also expedite the recovery time. In addition, LANAP typically requires just two treatment sessions compared to 5 to 10 sessions with traditional periodontal surgery.
You will need a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Fornaris to determine if you are a candidate for LANAP. However, this procedure may be right for you if you:
A LANAP treatment session can be performed from the comfort of our office. Your treatment will include measurement of the pockets between your teeth and gums, followed by painless treatment using a tiny fiber-optic laser inside the tissue pocket. The laser will destroy diseased tissues and bacteria around the tooth surface, allowing for tissue removal using a scaling device. Finally, the gums are re-secured to the teeth, and any loosened teeth may be adjusted and repositioned.
Laser treatment can help stabilize and reverse periodontal disease, but results must be maintained through an ongoing partnership between you and Dr. Fornaris. Our job is to show you how to maintain your periodontal health through at-home hygienic management and periodic in-office professional evaluation.
